A Gay Christian

Wow, where to start? Let's start off by saying that ever since my sexual stirrings (at 7yrs old) I knew I was different. I was attracted to boys. I thought nothing of it; it was just natural to me. I did not completely understand sexuality at age 7 but I knew that it was supposed to be a boy and a girl. So I was kind of confused until I grew older. I was brought up a Catholic and I was taught that being gay was a "sin".

At the Intersection: Gay Asian Male? Asian Gay Male?

I admit that as an Asian American gay male, I have long juggled these two identities, often favoring one over the other. As a person of color, I know without a doubt that the gay experience for us is different from the white gay community.

At the Intersection: LGBT Civil Rights are the Defining Issue of our Day

Thank you for the timely report that addresses so many of the issues facing the entire LGBT Community. My parents and grandparents worked for economic and societal rights of the 50’s and 60’s Civil Rights movement. LGBT Civil Rights are the defining issue of our day. As a gay African American I long for the day that I can share the same legal and financial benefits with my spouse as my heterosexual brothers and sisters. I am proud of my longtime support of the Human Rights Campaign.

At the Intersection: Fight for the Life of My Self-Esteem

You know, when I go to West Hollywood, as an African American male, I feel like in just passing through the doors of the clubs and bars – my status is demoted. Sure, these are largely sexual arenas – singles clubs. But I would still like to just pop out – maybe on a Sunday afternoon for a drink with my gay community. While there, though, it is a fight for the life of my self-esteem. While in a black church or black neighborhood my six foot six frame and shaved head is adored, here, I'm invisible by most – objectified by a few – and humanized by hardly anyone.

At the Intersection: Through the Eyes of a Young Bisexual Latina Woman

As a bisexual Latina artist with many friends who are gay, lesbian and transgender, I thought the report was really beautifully done. It highlighted the important idea that most LBGT people of color are concerned with the same issues that concern people from all walks of life, like job security, education, healthcare and personal safety. I felt that the report mirrored many of the experiences that my friends and I have had, both positive and negative.

As an African American...

My family has known all along that I do not and will not ever support discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender people. My discussions with my family since the issue of an amendment to define marriage as between a man and a women has come up has been based on my personal experience as an African American growing up in the ’50s and ’60s. I know firsthand the effects of discrimination, and I cannot tolerate or support it ever.
